Meet Chanel West Coast, the Latest Fashion-Obsessed White Female Rapper

We first discovered LA-based hip hop artist Chanel West Coast by accident. I had searched “Karl Lagerfeld” on Getty, expecting to find photos of Karl Lagerfeld, but instead I found photos of a tiny blond girl taken on the set of a music video. A little research unearthed this video of her at Coachella performing her first single, then titled “Karl Lagerfeld.”
Chanel, whose real name is Chelsea Chanel Dudley, got her start, like so many celebrities these days, on MySpace. You may know her from MTV–she’s had roles on both of Rob Dyrdek’s shows: Fantasy Factory and Ridiculousness. She’s been musical her whole life–her dad is a DJ in New York–and now she’s focusing on her rap career. But we’re pretty sure she’ll be more than just a flash in the pan: at 24, she recently signed with Lil Wayne’s Young Money record label and will be going on tour with him and other Young Money artists later this year.
And with a name like Chanel West Coast and a song about Karl Lagerfeld, rest assured that she’ll be working a fashion-y angle into her image.
As huge fans of Karl, we had to know more about the song and the petite white female rapper behind it. Cut to about a month later, and we’re sitting at The Smile with the pint-sized and absolutely delightful Chanel, who was looking California laid back sans extensions in a loose-fitting tank, shorts and Giuseppe Zannotti wedge sneakers. We chatted about everything from how her song came about (and why she had to change the name) to stylists, Kreayshawn comparisons, eye insecurity, and, of course, launching a clothing line.

So how did you land at hip hop to pursue as a genre?
My mom is actually a heavy metal rock chick–I grew up listening to a lot of rock music, and my dad is a DJ from here in New York. I would come out here every summer and winter and visit my dad. Usually, we didn’t have babysitters, so I would go to the club with my dad. He’s like, ‘Just hide in the booth,’ and it was really seeing my dad DJ that really got me more into hip hop. I’ve always loved poetry and poetry is a big part of rap, so it kind of just came naturally to me.

How did the name Chanel West Coast come about?
Well Chanel’s my middle name. It’s funny, my mom, when she got pregnant with me, she lived in New York, so my first name is Chelsea after where she lived–she lived in Chelsea–and my middle name is Chanel because that was her favorite perfume. Then West Coast, that added on kind of by accident. I was making my MySpace music page and every single Chanel was taken, so I was like, okay well I’m a West Coast artist, so I’ll just make it Chanel West Coast and people started calling me that, so it was just by accident.

How would you describe your style? Do you work with a stylist?
I work with stylists here and there for shoots or red carpet events. My day-to-day style is a little bit more casual, but whenever I’m on the red carpet or doing photo shoots, or music videos, I like to be a lot more glamorous. I like to mix up cheap and vintage stuff with high-end stuff, like today I’m wearing a Forever 21 shirt with Giuseppe sneakers. Some days I’ll feel like dressing like a skater girl; some days I’ll be more chic and dolled up and girly girl, so it’s really how I’m feeling when I wake up that day.

Favorite brands?
I love Giuseppe, Jimmy Choo; I love Chanel obviously; I love Balmain, Givenchy, all of the dope brands.

How about the song Karl Lagerfeld? Why Karl?
It’s actually, we’re calling it ‘Karl’ now in case he doesn’t happen to like it and wants to sue me or something, but really that song came about because I love fashion and it’s kind of like the opposite of what Kreayshawn did with ‘Gucci Gucci,’ which is kind of like dissing brands, but in this it’s paying homage to all of the big brands and to Karl and to fashion.

What do you feel like Karl represents in the song?
I feel like it represents fashion in general, really just looking fly. In the song, I say, ‘looking so fly I’m tied with the sky,’ so the song is about looking your best, looking fly and it’s not really only about the big brand names, it’s about being a fashionable, in style girl.

Have you always been interested in fashion?
I feel like growing up bicoastal, every time I would come to New York when I was little, that’s when I got more into it. You’re walking trough the city and passing so many boutiques and brands.

As an artist, do you want to be known for being fashionable or into fashion?
Definitely. I want to be known obviously for my music first and foremost, but as an artist I definitely want people to know that I’m into fashion and get a sense of my style so that way once I do move up as an artist, I can start my own line, and people will already know, this is what she’s like, so the line is going to be like this.

What do you have in mind for your clothing line?
Not super super high end, because I want it to be something affordable that almost everybody can get. It will probably be in like boutiques, kind of like Rihanna’s line.

Do you and Wayne ever talk about fashion?
He’s like more into skater fashion, which is one of the styles I’m into too. I grew up with skater kids, I skateboard myself, so he’s more into the skater fashion and that laid-back style, so I don’t really see him talking about fashion very much, but I definitely know that he respects it.
What’s next? Anything exciting in the works?
I’m working on my mix tape that’s out this month and the first single’s going to be ‘Karl,’ then I’m going on tour with Lil Wayne, T.I. and 2 Chainz, like Wayne brings out all the Young Money artists in his set, so I’m going to go on that tour with him, which I’m really excited about and from there, I don’t know what’s next, hopefully a lot of big exciting things!

Are you planning your wardrobe for the tour yet?
The girl who designed all of my clothing for my ‘Karl’ video–she’s my go-to girl now. She’s an amazing seamstress; she designs everything herself. Especially being a small petite girl, it’s hard to find stuff that fits, so it’s great having her because she’s going to be custom designing everything for me. I like that, too, because then I can be different and not just wearing what everybody else is wearing.

I noticed you’re almost always wearing sunglasses in interviews
I know! I love sunglasses. Part of the reason is–I’ll just be honest–I get a little bit insecure about my eyes. I feel like when I smile my eyes get really small; I don’t know why I hate it. A lot of the time I’m just wearing sunglasses because I don’t want people to think that I’m always high or something. I just naturally have really small eyes.

Well Karl Lagerfeld always wears sunglasses, too.
Actually in the video [for 'Karl'], I dress up like Karl, and I literally look like Karl Lagerfeld. I have a white wig, but I remember feeling the most in my element in the Karl scene with the sunglasses on because I love sunglasses.

Fast & Furious 6 wins box office race

Fast & Furious 6 remains the leader at this weekend’s domestic box office.
The action thriller featuring motor vehicles moving at swift rates of speed earned $34.5 million in its second week at theatres. Justin Lin directed the picture which has amassed $170 million since its release. Fast & Furious 6’s line-up is impressive with Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson and Ludacris all taking on roles in the film. The movie has almost immediately become profitable as it cost $160 million to make.
Now You See Me occupied second position this week in its debut with earnings of just over $28 million. The crime thriller starring Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Mark Ruffalo and Woody Harrelson follows an Interpol and FBI agent on their quest to capture illusionists who share their heist monies with members of the audience attending their magic performances. Now You See Me had a production budget of $75 million.
Sci-fi action film After Earth which stars Will Smith and his son Jaden brought in an even $27 million in its premiere. After Earth’s story centres on a young boy who roams around an abandoned planet with his estranged father after their spaceship crashes. It is up to the son to save his father when peril ensues. The M. Night Shyamalan feature that was created with a $130 million budget opened to disappointing results and has been panned by critics.

Another day in the life! Paris Hilton turns heads on Hawaiian beach as she struts her stuff in hot pink bikini

After a loved-up week on Maui's beaches with her man, it's time to get down to some serious work... in Honolulu.
Thirty-two-year-old Paris Hilton is truly making the most of the warm season, as she held a press conference and a campaign photoshoot for her Honey Bunch clothing line on yet another Hawaiian island.
With her doting 21-year-old boyfriend River Viiperi by her side for the entire jaunt, the designer's latest Instagram uploads included saucy shots of her posing in a hot pink bikini.

On Thursday, Paris told her Twitter followers: 'Had a lovely vacation in Maui. Now time for work. Just arrived in Honolulu. I have my Honey Bunch Clothing Line runway show tomorrow night.'
She posed in a baby pink bikini dotted with elaborate patterns, coupled with a matching headband, adding 'Back on set shooting. Now it's time for the bikini shots.'
Red high-heels, which did not appear to be at all beach-friendly, completed the look along with Paris' well-toned body.
Next, the heiress uploaded an alluring shot of herself sporting a bright pink bikini with a similar pattern.
She paired the two-piece with a pair of black (equally non-beach-friendly) high heels, large sunglasses and thick gold arm bling.

'Another on set bikini shot. How do you like this hot pink bikini?' Paris asked her Twitter followers.

The former The Simple Life star just can't seem to get enough of her new love for clothing and accessory design, posting multiple photos from the collection.

And it seems she is equally excited to share it with the world and get our opinions, tweeting: 'What do you think of my newest designs from my Honey Bunch clothing line?'

She's got her party hat on! Heidi Klum slips on eccentric headgear to celebrate turning 40 with her boyfriend, children and friend Fergie

Heidi Klum is known for her penchant for ornate Halloween costumes.
So when it came time to celebrate her 40th birthday on Saturday at the Hotel Bel-Air, the supermodel indulged her creative side by sporting a very special birthday hat.
Topping her long blonde locks as she made her way to the bash was a huge black top hat that was adorned with two miniature top hats.
Dressed similarly in dark colours, Heidi's bodyguard beau held her hand to steady her walk into the exquisite hotel.
He later changed into a black shirt, trousers and stetson as he brought Heidi's children Henry, Johan and Lou to the event, with the boys also sporting hats as the bash boasted a big hats theme.
This birthday is also special not just because it is the big 4-0 but because it is the model's first birthday with Martin.
Heidi and Martin - who has been her bodyguard for a number of years - have been dating since September 2012, after Heidi filed for divorce from Kiss From A Rose singer Seal in April 2012.
The model told Ellen DeGeneres recently that she was not worried about getting older.
The German stunner said: 'Forty is the new 30. I don't really care about aging. I'm happy. When I get one year older it means we're still here, having a good time.'
Arriving to the party after Heidi was a very pregnant Fergie.
The singers looked stunning in a multi-coloured pink dress that hugged her growing baby bump.

Saskatoon Fashion festival underway

Inside the AKA Gallery a fashion retrospective that covers 1910 to the 80s lines the walls. The exhibit tells the story of the 20th Century with different fabrics, cuts, and accessories.
The retrospective exhibit is also the home-base for the organizers for the Saskatchewan Fashion and Design Festival(SFDF).
The SFDF is the brain child of Jacqueline Conway, a marketing expert with a passion for design and the world of fashion in general. After studying marketing, Conway tried her hand at design, even attending school and completing a few internships before she realized her strength was in promotions.
Still, fashion was always a priority. “I’ve just always loved it, since I was a kid,” Conway said.
Conway spent time in Montreal, and when she moved back to Saskatoon she noticed there was a lack of infrastructure for the fashion industry in the province. She said in recent years, with events like SFDF and Saskatchewan Fashion Week in Regina, the industry is starting to take shape. “The fashion coming out of the province is getting better and better,” she said, adding that people are starting to take the industry more seriously here.
Last spring Conway and her team held their first SFDF, and Conway said it was a learning curve. This year she and her team started earlier, found the team they needed, and created new and fresh events.
The “crowning jewel” of the weekend-long festival is the SFDF Runway at Mercedes Benz on June 1. Tickets for the show range from $45 to $150, and its selling out fast.
Seven local designers will showcase their fall 2013 lines at the big event. “There’s actually a lot of of designers out there. What I look for in a designer is that they’re taking it seriously. They’re creating a brand for themselves; they’re looking to build a business. They want to make this a sustainable living for themselves.”
The final fashion show might be a bit pricey for some, but the festival includes other events that range from free to small admission fees. “We wanted everyone to have the opportunity to experience it on every level,” Conway said.
“We want the luxurious events that are reminiscent of high end fashion events you’d see in larger centres to more community-based. Maybe for a family a late-night fashion show isn’t accessible, but an afternoon fashion show in the park is.” power by :saskatoon.ctvnews.ca

FASHION TRACKS: KIKOROMEO’S SHAKEN NOT STIRRED

Wednesday 29th saw the second Bond themed KikoRomeo experience. Ann McCreath of KikoRomeo showed her 2013 women’s wear and menswear collections which were presented by female professional models lead by Ajuma Nasenyana and nine members of the Kenya 15s and 7s Rugby Team.

The event was slated to start at 6pm with a cocktail session that run through till the runway show started three hours later at 8pm.
The runway show was surprisingly short but the collections much bolder and brighter than last year’s especially for the menswear. The menswear line was described by the KikoRomeo team as “a range of separates inspired by the minimalist style of 60s fashion, the cool killer instincts of 007 and the sensual pull of the man with the golden gun...”
Vibrant shirts and jackets for the men in explosive flashes of violet, sulphur and skyfall-blue while the women’s wear collection, which was designed for the inner bond girl, is lean and natural, effortlessly sexy and stirs the curves and shakes down the figure focused more on Moonraker-pink, blaze-blue, spy-black, Octussy-green and Russian red.
Cocktail dresses and long mermaid evening gowns with plunging V-necks and swishy tails with my personal favourite being the bold red piece that head designer Ann McCreath wore to take her bow at the end of the show.
The “Shaken Not Stirred” event which had a strict 007 dress code was adhered to by most led by the local red carpet fashion greats Annabel Onyango in a two-piece leather bustier and batik print tea length pencil skirt, Wambui Thimba in one of summers biggest trends; a black on white jacket with leather sleeves and gorgeous studded Brian Atwood heels.
Stylist Connie Aluoch looked fabulous and fierce in a black romper, turquoise heels and chandelier earrings and new on my fashion radar, foodie Susan Wong also in a black and white cocktail dress paired with fire engine red heels.
Also in attendance Drum’s Carol Adero, Citizen TV’s Lillian Muli, Resolution Health CEO Peter Ndwati looking dapper in a charcoal grey suit, white shirt and blood red bowtie and Buddha Blaze.
Thank you to KikoRomeo for a lovely evening. I’m totally looking forward to the next one!
Have a lovely week beautiful people.

NEW DELHI: India's all-powerful censor board is planning a lighter approach to Bollywood after decades chopping tens of thousands of film scenes, from onscreen kisses to violent endings.
Set up by British rulers in the 1920s to block US movies with anti-colonial sentiment, the board went on to cut Indian films as much for their supposedly racy content as for their political overtones.
But as the country rapidly modernises, the government must walk the tightrope of catering to a more liberal, youthful India without angering still deeply conservative strands of society.
"The rules are old. We have to write them with a modern and honest outlook. The Indian value system has changed hence censor rules must change," admitted R Singh, joint secretary of the film department in New Delhi.
The government attempted to show its more open-minded approach at the recent "Cut-Uncut" festival in the capital, which screened originally censored film clips for the first time as part of Indian cinema's centenary celebrations.
Directors such as Ramesh Sippy, who made the Hindi action blockbuster "Sholay" (Embers) in 1975, also had the chance to vent their anger at censorship culture.
Sippy said he was forced to change his film's plotline at the insistence of the censors, who decided it was too violent.
"The board said: 'We will tell you how to end the movie', and I was forced to shoot the ending again. I realised that if I keep fighting, my film's release will not be allowed."
K Hariharan, a critically-acclaimed filmmaker from south India, said he felt like "an anxious student waiting for his performance card" whenever censors watched his film.
He thinks it is time to disband the board, which he sees as a colonial remnant that restricts freedom of expression -- an idea that the government may slowly be agreeing with.
"This whole business of brutally chopping scenes or forcing the filmmakers to alter the climax will have to end," said Singh, who oversees the task of issuing certificates to all Indian movies.
A more relaxed approach is already allowing filmmakers to experiment.
Aamir Khan tested the limits in 2011 with comedy "Delhi Belly", a film that outraged conservative critics for its toilet humour and dialogue strewn with profanities, which surprisingly passed the censors uncut.
Despite protests at cinemas and even a court case on charges of obscenity and insulting religion, the movie ran to full houses and became a cult hit for its reflection of young people in modern, urban India.
Censors admit that regulating content is becoming an unwieldy job in a country of 1.2 billion, which has witnessed an explosion in its television and media industry along with growing Internet access.
In the last two decades, the country went from having two just state-run channels to nearly 400 private ones, and filmmakers are increasingly keen to get their work on the small screen to generate more revenue.
But as censor board chief Pankaja Thakur points out, they run a greater risk of being chopped on television.
In April last year "The Dirty Picture", a popular film about the life of a 1980s Indian soft-porn star, was stopped hours before its television premiere after two court petitions objected to its content.
It took 60 cuts before it was allowed on to the screen.
"Television is a much more mass medium than the movie halls, so we have to ensure that content on TV is suitable," Thakur said.
The censors' dilemma reflects a larger debate about freedom of expression in India, which is proud of its status as the world's largest democracy but can also be quick to enact bans for fear of provoking agitation.
In 2011, northern states banned "Aarakshan" (Reservation), which tackled the thorny issue of caste quotas in government jobs and education, because they said it "could incite civil disorder and violence".
Southern Tamil Nadu state in January forced spy thriller "Vishwaroopam" out of cinemas after Muslim groups complained that they were portrayed negatively, until the director finally agreed to make alterations.
Objections to sex or nudity have mainly come from conservative Hindu groups who see themselves as champions of traditional Indian values -- and censors too still see their role partly as one of "moral guardianship".
They recently decided to take a more stringent approach to the "item number" -- a sexually-charged song-and-dance sequence that has come under growing fire as India debates its treatment of women after a spate of shocking sex crimes.
Others say it is up to the filmmakers and audiences to bring about a change.
"Ours is a really difficult job," said Thakur.
"We want to have a liberal approach and respect artistic endeavour, but at the same time we have to address the smallest possible objection."

Anna Friel googles vintage shops first thing, whenever she is in a new city.
The actress claims that shopping for retro clothing is something that helps her to relax when dieting. The star is a known follower of alternative cleansing diets, which replace solid foods with liquids for a period of time.
'I went to Bath recently and I was on this maple syrup cleanse so I could only drink herbal tea, but there was this vintage shop so it made me feel better about being deprived,' Anna explained in an interview with Grazia.
The petite actress has an impressive wardrobe to show for her love of fashion. Anna’s passion for vintage clothing happened by chance while filming television series Pushing Daises in Los Angeles.
'We visited the costumiers that have been supping the Warner Bros. Studios since 1910. It really inspired me. My first ever piece was an Edwardian lace dress that I still have,' Anna said.
It’s not only vintage that catches the star's eye. Anna is also a fan of more modern designers, including Céline, Victoria Beckham, and Lanvin.
The 36-year-old is currently dating fellow actor Rhys Ifans and has seven-year-old Gracie from a previous relationship. The actress is collecting her wardrobe with the hopes to pass it on to her daughter.
'Gracie is getting to that point where she’ll go and look in my closet and she loves rooting through my jewellery boxes. She likes anything shiny. I want to save all of my clothes and shoes for her. That’s the point of it and makes it all worthwhile,' Anna explained.

Students Protest Against Galliano.

John Galliano’s teaching post at Parsons School of Design is being protested by students.
It was announced recently that the designer will lead a course called Show Me Emotion at the New York City institution.
Galliano was fired from Christian Dior for making anti-Semitic slurs two years ago.
The New School’s Jewish Student Union has now put out a petition protesting against the appointment which can be found on change.org.
'We do not want money from our tuition going to this kind of person. We feel like we’ve been slapped in the face by our school. There should be no room for this kind of person as a staff member on the faculty at Parsons,' the petition statement reads.
'Imagine if the school were hiring a person who publicly voiced support for the KKK - there would likely be backlash because it’s not right to have someone like that teaching at a school. But because this is someone who has made anti-Semitic remarks, people are willing to look the other way. This is unacceptable.'
The petition argues it's 'disgraceful' of the design school to hire the highly-controversial designer.
Despite the short nature of the three-day design workshop proposed, the students are none-the-less outraged at the idea.
'It doesn’t matter if it's for three months or three days,' the statement added, 'hiring someone who has made such horrific comments shows that the school values Galliano over their entire Jewish student body.'

Lindsay Lohan Parties With New Boyfriend.

Lindsay Lohan spent the weekend partying with friends including her new boyfriend Avi Snow.
The troubled starlet - who was sentenced to 90 days in rehab this week after pleading 'no contest' to charges for lying to police about driving her car during a crash last June - was spotted kissing the musician and club promoter after his band City of the Sun performed in a club in Santa Monica on Saturday night (23.03.13).
A source told gossip website TMZ.com that the actress was there to support the band and left around midnight after spending the night sipping out of a water bottle.
The actress also allegedly spent Friday night partying with friends in a San Diego nightclub, where she is said to have asked to be served vodka in carafes, instead of bottles so her table appeared to be alcohol free.
The 26-year-old actress only recently started dating Avi and friends hope he will be a good influence on her.
A source close to the rocker recently said: 'Avi's not a feckless party animal, he works in that industry, sure, but he's got a good head on his shoulders.
'He's from a solid background and doesn't get involved with the drugs scene, he doesn't even drink much... basically, he knows who is and likes control, he could help Lindsay.'
Lindsay will undergo her sixth attempt at getting sober when she begins her court ordered stint in rehab before May 2 and her treatment will focus on her 'large' alcohol consumption and reliance on legal medications but the actress reportedly still doesn't think she has a problem and friends are afraid the treatment will not work.

Gwyneth Paltrow Tops People’s 2013 Most Beautiful List

You already knew she was beautiful, but now People has made it official, putting Gwyneth Paltrow at the top of the magazine's annual list of beautiful people, and naming her the World's Most Beautiful Woman.
But, not surprisingly, the 40-year-old Oscar winner is humble about her latest honor.

"Around the house, I'm in jeans and a T-shirt. I don't really wear makeup. That's what [my family] used to," she told the magazine, admitting that her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, even mocks her about it. "He'll make a joke about it. If I've gotten fully dressed up, he'll be like, 'Oh, wow! You're Gwyneth Paltrow!' Because he's used to seeing me in like baggy shorts and frizzy hair."
She credits her rigorous workout routine -- namely, the Tracy Anderson Method five days a week -- with helping her to age gracefully.
"It makes me look younger and feel strong," she said. "When I first started, I thought, 'I'll never be good at this. This is a nightmare!' But now it's like brushing my teeth, I just do it."
Gwyneth takes the reins from her pal Beyoncé, who received the honor last year, just a few months after giving birth to her first child, Blue Ivy. Over the years, the flawless faces of Michelle Pfeiffer, Cindy Crawford, Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, and Jennifer Aniston have graced the cover of the special issue.

Madonna’s Fashion Evolution On Display

CENTURY CITY: A one-day pop-up fashion exhibit called “Madonna’s Fashion Evolution” is to go on display Thursday at Macy’s in Century City, California.
The exhibit will be surrounded by the Material Girl junior fashion line Madonna created exclusively for Macy’s with her 16-year-old daughter, Lola.
“The pop-up exhibit at Macy’s perfectly exemplifies the inspiration and spirit of the Material Girl line and will give my fans a great opportunity to see the evolution of my style over the years,” Madonna said in a statement. Arianne Phillips,
Madonna’s longtime collaborator, styled and helped to curate the exhibit. Among the items to be displayed is the “Like a Virgin” wedding dress Madonna wore to the MTV Video Music Awards in 1984. “This was one of the most shocking, liberating and influential moments in pop culture/fashion history,” Phillips said. “Fashion has never been the same. Bold and unforgiving, humorous and shocking, we can depend on Madonna to challenge us to rethink fashion. Madonna has taken sacred garments like the wedding dress and religious embellishments, and re-contextualized them.”
“It’s a magical thing to bring all these iconic pieces together in one place,” said Dari Marder, chief marketing officer at Iconix Brand Group Inc., which is organizing the event. “This will show customers how influential Madonna has been to fashion and how that influences Material Girl today.”
“We are so thrilled to bring this unique experience exclusively to Macy’s customers,” said Martine Reardon, Macy’s chief marketing officer. “An homage to Madonna’s revolutionary style and influence on our Material Girl collection, ‘Madonna’s Fashion Evolution’ pop-up exhibit offers a rare opportunity to see some of her most iconic looks curated together in a never-before-seen display.”

Ex-SABC Exec Turns To Fashion

Motsepe's new retail venture, Morongwa House of African Fashion, will be launched on May 7. Pop-up stores will be opened in Parkhurst and Oakdene in Johannesburg.
The launch of the fashion house was inspired by her numerous African expeditions. She has roped in West African designers Clara Lawson Ames and Kinabuti to help "broaden the offering of continental African fashion", but remains the sole investor .
"I hope to attract interest in investment as the brand grows and proves its worth."
So don't expect to find Oscar de la Renta, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs, Diane von Furstenberg, Manolo Blahnik and Giuseppe Zanotti stocked at Morongwa.
"I'm targeting urban, modern, stylish and sophisticated lovers of fashion. I believe the brand will have broad appeal," Motsepe said.
"The intention is to make the fashion affordable and accessible but in line with the prestige the labels have and what one would pay for a good fashion brand."

Songa Asks: Can Fashion be Sustainable?

Sustainable fashion sounds like an oxymoron. Nevertheless, you may have heard the phrase recently in television advertisements, department stores, and on the runway. Is this the new face of fashion?
To answer this question, examining the events that have led the industry towards sustainability is imperative. We will profile Songa Designs, a company that has put sustainable fashion into practice. Lastly, we will leave you with some thoughts on where sustainable fashion is heading within the overall industry.

“Nike Supports Women in its Ads but Not its Factories”

The above headline appeared in one of many New York Times articles in the late 90s regarding sweatshop conditions in Nike factories. Nike experienced over a decade of consistent growth in revenue before the poor labor conditions in Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand hit newsstands. However, after $9.6 billion in revenue in 1998, Nike’s sales took a hit, dropping to $8.8 billion the following year. Forbes argued that boycotts and protests surrounding Nike’s labor exploitation of 400,000 Asian workers was among the reasons for the decline. Apparently, Nike agreed, as they went on to spend $2 billion dollars a year on marketing to repair their reputation.
Fashion is a demand-driven industry. In this case, consumer awareness affected Nike’s sales. When consumers learned of Nike’s factory conditions, some of them, but not all, stopped buying Nike products. However, $1.2 billion in lost revenue is a good enough reason to move towards better and more ethical business practices. A decade later, Nike is due credit for their transparency and for their recent efforts to clean up their material supply chain.
Nike now asserts that sustainability is how they approach social responsibility. However, Nike was not the only corporation to make the move towards sustainability. As consumer expectations increase, so does the responsibility of fashion giants.

What is sustainable fashion?

Sustainable fashion, also called ethical fashion, combines social responsibility and environmental stewardship with the creation of positive impact. For example, workers are paid living wages and have a safe and healthy working environment. Sustainable fashion operates on the triple bottom line in which profits, social impact, and environmental impact are given equal consideration.
With corporate social responsibility set aside, how can sustainable fashion work in the world of international business? Let’s take a look at Songa Designs.

Songa Designs: The beauty of handmade

Songa Designs offers a fashion accessory line made in Rwanda. Involving local Rwandans from the inception of Songa Designs allows the business to be successfully run in Rwanda, instead of the U.S. Their production model includes 150 individual artisans from women cooperatives, in which the women are all partners and have independent businesses. Through their growing network, it is possible to take advantage of benefits such as access to economies of scale and business expansion.
We had a chance to speak with Sarah Dunigan, the co-founder and CEO of Songa Designs. She emphasized that for-profit business was one avenue in which to make impact sustainable. Nonprofit initiatives may be able to create social impact as well, but relying on donations and grants make long-lasting sustainability difficult. As stated on their website and confirmed by Sarah Dunigan, “We believe that business can alleviate poverty. If done ethically, there is no confusion about the rules.”
They do not currently have a criterion to measure their social impact other than the number of women they employ. In an effort to preserve their environmental impact, they source their material locally, including the banana leaves and recycled steel seen in most of their designs. However, the change in the women’s standard of living is possible to observe in the day-to-day operations at Songa Designs: from simple changes like a new hairstyle, to significant achievements such as having the means to send their children to school. Someday they may be able to better measure these effects.
Currently, the accessories are sold in local markets, three retail stores in Rwanda, and online. They are now strategizing to expand sales to U.S. as well. In order for Songa Designs to compete in the international market, creating a high quality product was important. They invested over a year in training Rwandan women in standard quality control. They’ve also taught them new ways to use their design and handcraft skills, and the end result is an exclusive line of accessories shipped to customers all over the world.
Songa Designs has been operating for approximately two years now. Sarah Dunigan estimates that they will break even at the end of this year, and will continue to grow their social impact as sales improve.

Sustainable fashion: A brighter future?

We’ve seen how sustainable fashion can work through corporate social responsibility and through ethical fashion business practices. It raises the question of whether the fashion industry as a whole is becoming more sustainable? Or is it getting worse?
As mentioned before, fashion giants such as Nike and Puma have incorporated sustainability into their social responsibility. Other large retailers such as American Apparel and Levi Strauss have launched sustainable fashion lines while maintaining their traditional lines. H&M recently announced their Conscious Collection.
However, due to surging demand for fashion products, fashion names like Zara, Forever 21, and even the “conscious” H&M utilize “fast fashion,” in which cheap production and labor is used to deliver trends to consumers as soon as possible. While this fulfills consumers’ desire for novel and inexpensive clothing, it also perpetuates poor sustainability practices around the world.
Therefore, while some companies seem to be taking a step in the right direction, the fashion industry still has a long road to travel before reaching sustainability.
